• Please can you give an example of where you have managed an infrastructure project using remote third-party resources. Please give a brief overview of the challenges faced and how you handled them.

I was in charge of managing a software project in which local servers were managed by remote third-party engineering team. The challenge was in providing assurance to the stakeholders, and this was handled by putting together comprehensive list of scenarios and action manual in service level agreement, and shifting hours of operation to fill the gap hours.

• Please give an example of an infrastructure project that you were given where the scope was (or became due to changes) unclear. Please give a brief overview of how you managed this and what course you took to rectify.

Due to the nature of sporting event planning, which is often tight in time and high portion of uncertainty, unclear scope was a usual case in project planning. The simplest solution was to have periodical review to confirm and adjust as moving forward, and compensate with contingency plans and buffer time.

• Project delivery is very often a compromise between cost, quality and time. Please give a brief example where, during the course of your project it became clear that original estimates were too ambitious, and what action you took to manage expectations and bring the project back on course.

This had happened while proceeding with the mobile applications development. Though under-allocated budget was ultimately resolved by extra funding from Olympic sponsors later, when the decision was in my hands, I chose to de-scope functionalities, which in my realistic point of view, is not a direct tradeoff with the quality of the product.

Yes. While working as a research engineer for three years and a half in mobile handset development, I have grown fond of working in financial industry, for pursuing Chartered Financial Analyst curriculum upto level 2 recently. With work experience in technology and some knowledge build-up in finance, I feel prepared to set the first footstep in financial industry.

Whether it was work or academic environment, I usually find myself taking if not all, most portion including any tasks everyone else avoids. The team usually ends up being successful as long as it remains devoted and positive-minded. Though I used to believe a good leader as being a person who can back up everyone else on the team and willing to do what no one wants to do; however, looking at a long term scale, I realize I should push people to higher challenge for the greater good.

As I had spent past few years experiencing how business is operated in production level, I now wish to get a grasp of a bigger picture and how investment plays a role in business. Also, I have always been more of a quantitative skill-oriented person, for I feel that investment banking is the area in which I can better utilize my talents and contribute to the employer. On the other hand, regardless of role and location, I view it is crucial to belong to a core business division and headquarters office, thereby serving as a position of higher importance to an organization. As it had been decided that I will spend next upcoming years in London, I believe I will get higher degree of satisfaction at a London-based bank, along with the kind of self-esteem of working for one with such privilege and long history.

During both of my bachelor's and master's program, I was involved in research projects, which respectively resulted publications, with details outlined in my curriculum vitae. One of the most valuable college experiences I have as a personal asset is an intramural football team experience. Having started with no resources or knowledge, the team had gone through countless obstacles and hardships, but every team member managed to enjoy playing, and take with him as one of the most memorable college experiences. With dedication of time and efforts, teamwork and leadership lessons I had acquired from the activity was far greater than any result-basis outcomes achieved.

• Describe a recent significant challenge you have had to face that called for initiative and creativity. What made the situation challenging, what obstacles did you have to overcome and what did you have to do to meet the challenge / solve the problem?

That would be my current initiative to advance to my next career stage. Whilst working as an engineer in Korea, I had decided that not only switch career to financial industry, but why not begin work in a totally different location, more precisely, London. Despite the original plan of making transition without any time gaps, a career switch, especially at a far location was a challenge, also one demanding high degree of time and effort. With workload which kept growing, I realized the need to solely concentrate on a job search, relocate before the interview process begins and take some refreshment time. In this recessionary times, with the fact that my previous employer was somewhat highly regarded within Korean society, some people saw it was reckless for me to quit the job and move to a distinct environment. It was certainly not easy thing to give up; however, it was a risk worth-taking and a fair tradeoff in return for active mind and willingness I am now equipped with. In addition, I applied to and received a working eligibility to work in United Kingdom in order to hedge the risk taken. Outcomes are unforeseeable as i am still in the mist of recruiting process, but regardless, I believe this will be a meaningful period for myself and a turning point of significance in my life.

• Describe a recent situation where you have had to set particularly high standards for yourself and / or exceeded expectations. What did you do and to what extent were these standards achieved?

One recent example of setting high standards high standards would be the recital I had last year. Long ago, in my youth, I had once pursued music performance as my central career. Though it had been years since I quit playing, I had decided that I had liked to give a chance before leaving Korea. The major obstacle came along with not the performance quality itself, since it was expected, but with the event organization. As cost was the major issue, after allocating huge portion to hall rental and reception preparation, I had decided to allocate some of my time in ticket, program and flyer design, then searched for a publication factory from which I can produce customized printing for a bargain. Also, I managed to raise some funding with the remaining design spaces, while asking friends and family members for a help in popularizing. Not only I ended up being able to host the event without any substantial expense, but also the recital ended up being a huge success gathering over two hundred contended attendees. In the future, I hope to further extend such standards by also integrating my own gallery display along with the recital reception.

In this competitive, yet recessionary times we now live in, BlackRock is certainly one of the active players in highly integrated global economy. While there are numerous financial institutions striving to increase their share, the applicant finds among them, BlackRock as the one entity that is suitable to him. Having attended both large and comparably smaller academic institutions, the application had came to realization that individuals are more likely to be well-taken care of, while access to variety of resources could be limited. However, of course, in this global and digital society, access to knowledge is merely determined by one’s search skills and ability to teach oneself. In that respect, the applicant finds that BlackRock, not only growing fast, but also highly efficient, is the entity which the applicant may continue to strive along with.

• Why have you chosen the business division you have chosen?

In respect to the chosen business division, quantitative analysis has always been part of my key strengths. While there had been times in which I considered programming as one field I could utilize that strength, having taken some interest in past few years, I feel that I have found a place where my skills can be better applied to. During my preparation for Chartered Financial Analyst curriculum, I found myself with those financial practices in application to my own life, amongst them being a habit of analyzing and planning time and money allocation in daily basis. As my brain seems to already be in mode of quantitative risk and return analysis, I view it as a sign that I am well-prepared in that respect. Therefore, I seek a chance to confirm that this is the industry that suits me better, and also I, myself is the one that BlackRock finds right fit for the tasks involved with.

Though there may be more clarified and pre-defined strengths I may be able to present to others, I find my ability to quickly analyze a problem and undertake executions following upon solutions as which defines my competency. Among many of the successes I recall, one good example is post-conference presentation actions I had taken. After somewhat satisfactory presentation I had for my own publication at a conference, I took time to analyze list of qualities which fell short. Following upon my analysis, I immediately took three actions: 1) started working as a part-time lecturer to improve my presentation skills, also earn some side-pocket money, of course. 2) self-study vocabularies and creative writing in order to enhance my diction. 3) created a webpage which would allow others who take interest in my publication to seek details on my research. As a result, I have stronger verbal skills, and also a website which even further, well-represents my identity. In such respect, I have been both broadening and extending my expertise in various fields, and on top of that, became proficient in adaptability and quickly absorbing materials. I strongly believe this is my strongest assurance for any risks that may arise in shifting to a financial industry.
